Landlocked Uganda sits across the equator. Its population is about 20,400,000. A population racked with AIDS. Tens of thousands die each week. For many years it has been recognised as the worldwide epicentre of the AIDS epidemic.
The country is now so poor it is recognised by the British government as meriting special financial help through the Millennium Gift Aid programme. And among that population are 1,100,000 children who have been orphaned because their parents have died from AIDS or the HIV virus. Some have one remaining parent also with AIDS or the HIV virus, with a short life expectancy, struggling to bring up a large family with little or no income.
Children living without a future - about 5.5% of the population. There are more than 400 impoverished orphans in the Kabbubu Jungle alone.
