Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is the largest organisation in the world training dogs specifically for people who are either born deaf or who have lost their hearing. With 1 in 7 of the adult population having significant hearing problems there is an increasing need for hearing dogs nationwide. The charity provides an effective way of reaching this group and helping reduce the alienation that can often be associated with being deaf or having some degree of hearing loss. Hearing dogs cannot communicate with their owners via barking and therefore are taught to use suitable alerts, such as gaining attention via their paw and taking their owner to the cause of the sound, or lying down in the case of a danger sound. Everyday sounds include doorbells, cooker timers and even smoke alarms. The majority of the dogs used come from rescue centres or are unwanted pets.’
