The Bubble Foundation UK raises funds to support babies suffering from a rare, inherited condition called Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or SCID. They are born without an immune system and cannot fight the simplest of infection.
The Unit also treats older children suffering from other severe primary immunodeficiencies, which, if untreated, lead to disability in late childhood and often death by early adulthood. Additionally, we have begun to treat children suffering from leukaemia and severe forms of arthritis.
The only way of keeping the babies and children safe from infection is to care for them in a Bubble, a high-tech sterile space, measuring 8 feet square, their ‘home’ for the duration of their treatment.
And the only chance of survival for these ‘BUBBLE’ children is to give them a new immune system, by bone marrow transplantation - a difficult and painful treatment. The process typically takes 6 months, but can be longer, up to 2 years. The Charity works in partnership with Newcastle Children’s Bone Marrow Transplant (Bubble) Unit, one of only two specialised centres in the UK and Ireland.
We raise funds for medical research, medical equipment, toys and educational equipment and parent support.
